1. Dress inappropriately

Do we really need to say what is appropriate from what’s not for a job interview? You want to make sure you look professional when you are heading out to your interview. Especially so if the job is an office.

Ladies, halter tops are only appropriate if you are wearing a jacket to cover it. Guys, make sure your clothes are nice and clean and of course wrinkle free.

2. Limp or bone-crushing handshake

Seriously! You don’t need to crush anyone’s hand while shaking it. But at the same time you don’t want to offer a limp handshake either. Find a balance between the two.

3. Swivel on the chair

This is most annoying! Yes it’s a swivel chair but it’s dizzying when you “swivel” on it. Just don’t do it! It’s unprofessional and you are not on a swing-set.

4. Wear too much cologne

Hey, I get it. You want to make sure you smell nice and anyone would appreciate that. But when it comes to job interviews, you need to be careful. One of the things you definitely don’t want to do, is stifle the interviewer by emptying half the bottle of cologne on yourself.

That’s a turn off right there and your interview won’t last very long at all. You know why? Because you are stifling the life out of the interviewer and he/she needs to breathe!

5. Wear too much Jewelry

Um, the interview is not the place to display the amount of jewelry that you own. That’s not the reason why you are there. Furthermore, that type of display is for eBay or Amazon, okay?

Unless you are interviewing at a tattoo shop, leave your nose ring and other jewelry at home. When it comes to wearing jewelry at a job interview, rule of thumb; less is more.

6. Leave their cell phone on during the interview

Addicted much? Now some people seem to be suffering from an intense form of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). Listen, if you have to hold on to your phone while at a job interview, then clearly the interview/job is not that important to you. That’s the message you are sending to the interviewer.

More specifically, you are transmitting that your phone and what’s happening on it, is more important to you. The bottom line? NEXT! Since YOU, are not going to be hired. We’re not going to hire and pay someone who is going to be on their phone all day.

7. Answer their cell phone during an interview

Oh my goodness, need we say more? Listen, you might as well grab your stuff and head on out of the interview room while you answer your phone. Simply turn off your cell phone for the duration of the interview. How difficult is that? All you need to do is press the off button. That’s it.

The world is not going to fall apart if you are not available for 30 minutes or so.

8. Have absolutely no knowledge about the company

If you have no knowledge or idea about the company you are interviewing with, then why bother? Interviewers appreciate candidates who have at least some sort of knowledge about the company they want to work for. 

No one is saying you need to represent the company’s Wikipedia page, but have some knowledge of the company you say you want to work with.
