How to Job Search Online: 2 Quick Tips

How to search for a job online? Well, it’s actually easier than you think. The key is knowing where to look to find legitimate online jobs. In this article we’ll show you how to find an online job, avoid the scams and find the job you’re looking for. I don’t think we need to re-emphasize the point that you definitely need to exercise caution when searching for jobs online.

Given the technological advances and the fact that so many people are online, employers find it advantageous to post jobs online. However, not every job posting might be a legitimate one, so you need to be careful.

How to Job Search Online

1. Go Directly to the Company’s Website

This works for any website really. Some employers post jobs or available careers on their websites that you can apply directly for. So as you visit various websites you can look to see if they have jobs available. Most often you’ll see these jobs or careers listed down below on the website.

For example, if you visit Zillow, Angie’s List, or Home Advisor, you’ll see careers listed at the bottom of these sites. All you do is click on that link and you’ll see the jobs or careers that are available. You can even find jobs on Amazon.com.

2. Use Job Search Sites

Apart from listing available jobs or careers on their website, some employers use job posting sites. It’s more advantageous to do so since people also use these sites to find jobs.

Listed in no particular order, are our top ten (10) recommended job listing sites. The list includes:

  1. Galssdoor
  2. IndeedJobs.com
  3. MonsterJobs
  4. JobsiteUk
  5. ZipRecruiter
  6. StepStone
  7. TotalJobs
  8. CaribbeanJobs
  9. CareerBuilderr.com
  10. SimplyHired.com

Of course there are more job posting sites out there. However, there are lots of jobs posted on each one of the sites listed above and some of them offer global options.

Even if you live outside of the U.S. you can use these sites to find a job close to you. So no matter where you are in the world, you can use some of these sites to search for a job close to you.

For example, InddedJobs.com operates in 60 countries around the globe; CareerBuilder.com operates in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia, while a few others are more extensive. TotalJobs has an extensive group of job sites as well. You can click the link below for more details on each of the job sites listed above.

Using job search sites

You can browse anyone of these sites to find the job you are looking for. Simply go to the site and enter the job you are looking for in the site’s search bar. Depending on the job and the area you are in, you’ll most likely see a multitude of options pop up. You can also see reviews from others about what it’s like to work at a particular organization.

You can also create a free account so that you can get job alerts for new job postings you can apply for. That’s really how you job search online. Keep in mind that none of these sites ask you to pay anything when applying for a job.

If you find a job online that requires you to pay money upfront for it, then that’s not a legitimate job offer. Employers who use these job posting sites, pay for the service. One of the things you need to keep in mind as you job hunt, is that there are scams out there, so you need to be careful.

The Better Business Bureau has highlighted 10 steps to avoid scams online. We suggest you take a look at it to make sure you protect yourself.

You also need to keep in mind that finding the job online and applying for it, does not make it yours automatically. You still need to have an interview and all that jazz. So make sure your resume is up to date.

Create your own opportunity

However, as a job hunter sometimes you need to think outside the box and create your own opportunity. That means utilizing the technology to make yourself an income.

For example, sites like Fiverr, Upwork, and Elance (just to name a few), offer freelance options. So you can use your knowledge as a freelancer in your area of specialty to earn an income.

You can even do something like this in your spare time to earn an income. The only drawback is that these sites take a bit of the commission you earn. So if you are okay with that, then it’s something to look into.

Using the technology to create your own opportunity can often bring rewarding results.
